2025 Belongs To YouTube?
PREDICTING 2025 MEDIA
2024 is done and dusted. Out of the 5 predictions I made last year, I got 3 right, 2 getting there:

→ European broadcasters will go big on Free Streaming: ITVX, TF1, M6 boast 15 to 30K programs available for free in their hubs solidifying their transformations from broadcasters to streamers and super aggregators.
→ Broadcasters and streamers will invest in Women’s Sports and build bespoke vehicles for them: Netflix buying the Women’s Football World Cups.
→ European Telcos and Pay TV Providers will focus on cross-vertical bundles: to build tomorrow’s bundle resistance to Big Tech. The best example of this is Canal+ who may have lost Disney+ (at the end of December) but hard-bundles Paramount+ (on top of Apple TV+ already included) and offers 30% off Apple Music to its subs, and much more.

→ Canal+ will make a come back in the Nordics: they increased their stake in Viaplay but no rebrand or relaunch in sight (they did it in the Netherlands though where you can now enjoy MyCanal). I’m keeping this one for 2025 as the group is now a stand alone entity listed on the London Stock Exchange which should give them room to further expand their footprint through M&A.
→ Samsung will make a coup and buy exclusive rights to a sports event or a reality show in Europe: they bought exclusive rights to a live K-Pop awards show but no big bang purchase of a sports event.
